Downtown El Cajon, National Main Street Community

This year, the efforts of El Cajon CDC earned recognition for commercial district revitalization by meeting standards for performance set by the National Trust for Historic Preservation's National Main Street Center. El Cajon CDC joins 593 other Main Street revitalization programs nationally recognized as 2006 Accredited National Main Street Programs.

The annual accreditation process evaluates commercial district revitalization programs based on criteria ranging from having an active board of directors and paid professional manager to tracking economic progress and preserving historic Main Street buildings.

"Rebuilding a district's economic heath and maintaining that success requires broad-based community involvement, active support from both the public and private sectors, and sound management," said Doug Loescher, director of the National Trust's Main Street Program.

Old Highway 80 is revived!

Once called the “Broadway of America,” Old US Highway 80 was a true intercontinental highway, running between San Diego and Savannah, Georgia. By 1974, in San Diego and Imperial Counties, most of the highway was replaced by Interstate 8, leaving the old road and many communities frozen in time. Today, parts of this once busy highway are among the loneliest in San Diego County.

A committee of volunteers representing various communities, cities, chambers of commerce and civic organizations realize the importance of reviving this old road and believes that redesigning Old Highway 80 as a historic route has great potential to tie committee’s hope that it will be able to market the route and other side trips to travelers and visitors. Long forgotten memories can be rediscovered along this ‘old stretch’ from the Pacific Ocean to the Arizona border than has helped to shape our history.
