Active Neighborhood Groups

Lend A Hand helps neighbors meet and form neighborhood groups to actively tackle neighborhood concerns, organize enhancement projects, and celebrate where they live. We believe that vibrant neighborhoods are supported by engaged residents. We provide resources and tools for these groups to initiate projects that positively impact the neighborhood.

Our active neighborhood groups are committed to forming strong neighborhoods that will have a lasting impact on the community.

Neighborhood Enhancement Projects

Upcoming Lend A Hand Neighborhood Enhancement Projects

Join in the fun as we bring the community together in a big way to landscape, restore tired fencing, paint vibrant murals, and enhance a neighborhood in Downtown El Cajon over two event days this spring.

The first of two neighborhood enhancement projects in Downtown El Cajon is scheduled for:

Saturday, March 27, 2010
8:00 am - 2:00 pm
East Park Avenue and Roanoke Road

During this first phase of work, volunteers will have the opportunity to help residents replace dilapidated fencing on the block or participate in an area-wide clean-up. Like our normal Saturday Morning Clean-ups, volunteers will pick-up trash and identify graffiti for removal. It will be a fun-filled day of productivity in our community with lunch, refreshments, and music!

In our standard fashion, we will gladly accept usable household donation items for the San Diego Rescue Mission at this event. And California Metals will recycle your electronic waste for free (please, no microwaves or other large household appliances).

Wait there’s more!

On May 29, 2010, volunteers, residents, and supporters will continue improving East Park for the second round of neighborhood enhancement projects from 8:00 am– 2:00 pm. This exciting event will feature volunteer-friendly mural painting projects in the vicinity of the Cajon Valley Middle School ballpark. Continue to check the website for more details as the date draws near!

Volunteers, Participants, Sponsors, and Materials are still needed for both Lend A Hand enhancement projects!

Do you have landscaping, construction, or contracting experience? Can you volunteer your time, materials, or expertise? Every contribution, large or small, is important to the success of Lend A Hand, making a significant impact on neighborhoods and lives in the El Cajon residential areas. Contact Christina Burke, Community Development Coordinator, at (619) 401-8858 to join the growing number of individuals and organizations committed to positive community change.

Yes! I want to volunteer. How do I register?
To register for either worthwhile event, click here to complete our volunteer application. Be part of our incredible army of volunteers who turn out in force to clean, restore, and spruce up this neighborhood in Downtown El Cajon. If you have questions about volunteering, please contact Erica Nagy, Neighborhood Resource Assistant, at (619) 401-8858.

Neighbors come together to identify the projects that will uplift and restore their neighborhoods. With a little help from volunteers and a big hand from residents and local businesses, neighborhoods are improving one block at a time.

UArt, Utility Box PaintingUArt: Downtown El Cajon's Utility Art Box Program

Serve Your Community, Paint a Utility Box

U Art program logoCommunities express themselves through art. UArt gives art lovers and community enthusiasts the opportunity to share their artistic gifts by painting common utility boxes. Vibrant artwork enhances public spaces, deters unsightly graffiti, and communicates local character, history, and values.

While UArt greatly benefits the community, it gives artists great exposure too. Enticed by exciting new development and free community events in Downtown El Cajon, thousands of motorists and pedestrians notice these transformed utility boxes. Get your artwork recognized and serve your community by painting a utility box. Participating artists will receive up to $75 to reimburse the cost of paint and painting utensils. Donating your time to this meaningful activity will make you a part of the Downtown landscape for years to come, strengthening your connection to your community. Most importantly, it is fun for everyone involved!

To paint a utility box, follow these easy steps by April 30, 2010:

  1. Please click here (PDF) to obtain a copy of the application and learn all about the process, rules, and guidelines.
  2. Complete your application and a color rendering of your proposed design on the template provided. You may submit several templates at once.
